OCR: Analysis of Phobos Analysis of Deimos Mars's satellites MARS: GENERAL INFORMATION Mars has two satellites. They were discovered in 1877, MARS'S SATELLITES @ by American astronomer Asaph Hall using the Washington Observatory's 66-centimeter telescope. They have been named Phobos (Greek for "fear") and Deimos ("terror"). Phobos is particularly remarkable. Only 5900 kilometers above the Martian surface, it orbits around the Red Planet Satellite at an extraordinary speed, completing its revolution in Phobos only 7 hours and 39 minutes. Deimos orbits at a distance of 19,000 kilometers from Mars and its revolution period is 30 hours and 17 minutes. Neither of the satellites is more than a few dozen kilometers in diameter. Satellite Deimos In 1945, Phobos created quite a stir among astronomers when American astronomer S.P. Sharpless claimed it was revolving around the Red Planet faster and faster. This meant that Phobos's orbit was becoming shorter. So it was orbiting at lower and lower altitudes. Would it one Compared day crash to the surface of Mars? It was thought that Phobos to an asteroid would eventually encounter resistance in Mars's upper atmosphere that would slow its orbit. But the satellite did not slow down (the planet's upper atmosphere being very thin), so scientists conjectured that Phobos might have an extremely low density-perhaps it was even hollow. MARS BETAT
